During osmosis, a membrane separates two solutions containing different amounts of dissolved chemicals.
In reverse osmosis, pressure is applied to the concentrated side of the membrane. This forces the osmotic Process into reverse so that with adequate applied pressure, pure water is forced from the concentrated (contaminated) side to the diluted (treated) side. Treated water is collected in a storage container. The rejected Contaminants on the concentrated side of the membrane are washed away as wastewater.
